The Type 2 connector, sometimes called the Mennekes connector after the company that developed it, is defined in IEC 62196-2. It has seven pins and can carry single-phase or three-phase AC power, so the same plug works with a 7.2 kW home wallbox or a 22 kW three-phase public charger.
The actual charging speed is set by the lower of the charger's output and the car's onboard charger rating. Type 2 also forms the top half of the CCS2 inlet used for DC fast charging.
